The Centenary Novices Chase is one of the more recent additions to the Festival having made its debut on the card when a fourth day was added in 2005. The race – formerly the Jewson Novices Handicap Chase – is for novices chasers aged five and above and is staged over an extended two-and-a-half miles on the Old Course. Those rated higher than 140 when the weights are announced need not apply, with the Jewson providing the higher class 2.5 mile novices with their opportunity. The potentially inexperienced chasers will need to be accurate as accurate as possible at each of the 16 fences if they are to prevail. The race brings the first day of the Festival to a close, and punters looking to recover their losses would be advised to look for a seven-year-old without much weight on its back if the eight-year trends are anything to go by.
The race itself has gone through a few changes for such a fledgling contest, being run as the Jewson Novices Handicap Chase until 2010 before the buildings supplies boys began sponsoring the new level-weights Jewson Novices Chase. That race continues to take place on the Wednesday while this one is now the closer on the Tuesday, and is now sponsored as Pulteney Land Investments Novices Handicap Chase.
