The Byrne Group Plate is a Grade 3 handicap chase run on the third day of the Cheltenham Festival in March. The race is open to horses aged five years and above, and is run on the new course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles 5 furlongs, during which there are seventeen fences to be negotiated.
Established back in 1951, under its original name the Mildmay Of Flete handicap chase. This was in memory of the 2nd Baron Mildmay of Flete (1909–1950), an amateur National Hunt jockey who rode three winners at the Cheltenham Festival. The inaugural race took place in April because its planned running in March was abandoned due to waterlogging.
The Racing Post sponsored the contest during 2006-2008, and the race was run under the guise of the Racing Post Plate. The 2009 renewal of the race was run as the Freddie Williams Festival Plate – a tribute to ‘Fearless’ Freddie Williams (1942–2008), a popular Scottish bookmaker who owned a pitch at Cheltenham and was well known for laying massive wagers on course.
The construction company Byrne Group began supporting the race in 2010, and continue to do so ahead of the forthcoming Cheltenham Festival.
In recent seasons David Pipe has put together a nice profile of wins in the race, having winners Great Endeavour (2010), Salut Flo (2012) and then Ballynagour (2014) so it is worth closely looking at anything he runs in the race.
